The official X (formerly Twitter) account for Frieren: Beyond Journey's End has unveiled a new visual adding Fern to the Frieren illustration created in collaboration with the "Vermeer: Girl with a Pearl Earring" exhibition, which opens on August 21, sparking buzz on social media.
The collaboration between the exhibition and the Frieren: Beyond Journey's End manga had already been announced, with the first reveal being a newly drawn illustration of Frieren inspired by the famous painting "Girl with a Pearl Earring." This latest update reveals a surprising full picture: Fern standing behind the oil-painting-style frame depicting Frieren, holding it up with both hands. Fern, dressed in a calm, deep green gown, quietly supports the frame, while a grimoire and staff are placed at her feet, creating a rich composition that fuses fine art with fantasy. The general lottery for exhibition tickets opens on July 14.
Frieren: Beyond Journey's End is a hit fantasy manga written by Kanehito Yamada (original work) and illustrated by Tsukasa Abe. Set in a world "after" the hero's party has defeated the Demon King, the story follows Frieren, an elf mage who has lived for over a thousand years and helped the hero defeat the Demon King. Following the death of one of her former companions, she sets out on a journey "to get to know people." The story's portrayal of an elf's vast, unending sense of time alongside her fleeting yet warm bonds with humans has moved readers and viewers alike.
In response to the illustration, social media has been flooded with admiring comments such as, "Ohh, I see... so that's where Fern is...," "This isn't just about being good at drawing, it's genuinely artistic," "The composition is amazing, especially combined with the color of Fern's dress," "I really love this kind of atmosphere," "It's so packed with things I love that I saved it to my favorites," and "Both of them look like a painting." There have also been humorous reactions, including, "Fern, how long do you have to keep that pose?" and "What about a portrait of the hero Himmel... (lol)"
