“So It Was True After All”—A Nightmarish Turn of Events… Episode 44 of “The Apothecary Diaries” Sees Shisui’s True Identity Revealed, Sparking an Outpouring of Sorrow

In Episode 44 of the anime “The Apothecary Diaries,” which has been airing sequentially since May 30, the true identity of Shisui (voiced by Asami Seto) is finally revealed. Online, many voices of sorrow have emerged, with comments such as “It’s finally been confirmed” and “This is kind of a shock.”

In the previous episode’s ending, Maomao (voiced by Aoi Yūki) sneaks into a storeroom with Kyou-u (voiced by Natsumi Fujiwara), but they are discovered by Shenmei (voiced by Rica Fukami). Episode 44, titled “Fortress,” continues from there, with one of the Four Consorts, Consort Loulan—who had been missing from the inner palace—interrupting Maomao and the others’ predicament by saying, “It’s just children playing a prank… Let’s go quickly, Mother.”

Hearing Loulan’s voice, Maomao is convinced—“So it really was true”—that her true identity is Shisui. Reflecting on Shisui’s behavior up to this point, Maomao thinks, “She hid from the Empress Dowager and avoided approaching Consort Lishu at the public bath so that her identity as Consort Loulan wouldn’t be exposed.”

Furthermore, in this episode, suspicions arise that Shishou (voiced by Chō), the father of Shisui (Consort Loulan), may be about to incite a rebellion. Lakan (voiced by Takuya Kirimoto) earnestly requests that Jinshi (voiced by Takeo Ōtsuka) mobilize the army to suppress the traitor Shishou.
