Jinshi vs. Gyokuyō: Movement in the Battle for Maomao’s Ownership? In "The Apothecary Diaries," Jinshi Calls Her Name and Touches Her Lips—Even Gyokuyō Is Surprised by His Bold Move

Jinshi (CV: Takeo Ōtsuka) finally called Maomao (CV: Aoi Yūki) by her actual name instead of “the apothecary”! In episode 38 of the anime "The Apothecary Diaries," the scene in which Jinshi touches Maomao’s lips caused fans to explode with excitement, with reactions online such as “Gyaa—he called her by name!!!” and “He touched her lips aaahhh!”

Jinshi is often seen meddling with Maomao, but a rival of sorts exists in Gyokuyō (CV: Atsumi Tanezaki), the high-ranking consort whom Maomao serves as a poison tester. In episode 38, a competition broke out between Jinshi and Gyokuyō over who gets Maomao.

During the conversation, when Jinshi asked, “May I have her (Maomao) back?” Gyokuyō responded with a smile, “If you say ‘borrow,’ I’ll let you have her.” Jinshi, however, did not yield, replying, “No, I mean ‘have her back.’ This Maomao.”

Up to this point, Jinshi had always referred to Maomao as “the apothecary.” As those around them watched in surprise, Jinshi went further, saying, “Once she returns, there’s no point in asking her anything. I’ll make sure she keeps quiet,” and touched Maomao’s lips with his finger.
