Under normal circumstances, there is an overwhelming difference in social status between the two. On top of that, Maomao usually maintains a cool attitude toward Jinshi, but during this “social status switching date,” something feels distinctly different. They stop by food stalls and share skewers, their affectionate interactions causing viewers to comment excitedly, “I could watch this vibe forever,” “It’s a date, it’s a date!!” and “Jinshi looks like he’s having so much fun.”

“The Apothecary Diaries” is an anime adaptation based on a light novel of the same name by Hyuganatsu. The story has also been adapted into manga in two monthly magazines, and the series has surpassed 40 million copies in circulation. The TV anime aired two consecutive cours starting in October 2023 and became a huge hit for its intriguing mystery involving Maomao’s work as a poison tester in the inner palace and her comical exchanges with Jinshi. The second season of the anime is set to air beginning January 2025, and a sequel was announced in July. Furthermore, Universal Studios Japan is hosting a limited-time attraction, “The Apothecary Diaries Mystery Walk: Investigate the Mysterious Medicine,” until January 4, 2026. The franchise is also slated for its first online game adaptation, and its popularity continues to soar.
