The enemy character Aura (voiced by Ayana Taketatsu), who appears in the blockbuster anime “Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End,” is so popular that she was one of the first villains from the series to be made into a figure. While quietly amassing a devoted following, Aura’s most memorable scene is surely her anguished expression upon being defeated by Frieren (voiced by Atsumi Tanezaki) in episode 10.
Aura, as depicted in the series, is a powerful demon who uses the magic “Subjugation Spell (Azelluse)” to eternally dominate those with weaker magical power than herself. She is also feared as “Aura of the Guillotine.” Aura’s popularity landed her in the top ten in character polls, and despite being a villain, it was decided in February 2024 that she would receive a figure alongside protagonists Frieren and Fern (voiced by Kana Ichinose), attesting to her strong support.
Many fans probably think of the scene in episode 10 as Aura’s defining moment. In this episode, Aura attempts to subjugate Frieren with her magic, but, overwhelmed by Frieren’s extraordinary power, she is instead bound by Frieren’s subjugation magic. When Frieren commands, “Aura, kill yourself,” Aura, tears streaming down her cheeks, says, “Impossible... me...” and presses her sword to her own neck.
