When asked about playing Ichitarō, Yamashita reflected, "Though the profile says 'sickly and unable to go out,' he doesn't seem to mind being sickly. He has a strong will to live and acts with vitality. When voice acting, I put all my effort into it. I felt that his inner strength and strong desire to do what he should and wants to do are very impressive, and I wanted to focus on that."
As for Ichitarō's caretakers, Nikichi and Sasuke, Okino, who plays Nikichi, shared, "In interviews about this work, I found it rewarding that Taku (Yashiro)'s character creation and mine somehow linked. I aimed for the feeling of a slightly nagging mother towards her child, and by working together with Taku, we complement each other's missing parts, which gives the impression of two people being one." Yashiro added, "On the other hand, Sasuke might not exhibit paternal characteristics, but he's lively, cheerful, and approachable, providing assurance to Ichitarō in that sense. In terms of care, Sasuke complements Nikichi's way of taking care of things, and by discussing it with Okino, we felt like two halves of a whole," reflecting the good teamwork of the two characters watching over Ichitarō.
During a voice-over recording session, Yamashita reflected, "There was a contrast between the human side and the yokai side, but it seemed like many of the people playing the yokai were having a lot of fun acting. It brought a bit of a chuckle to the recording site." Yashiro revealed that materials concerning the historical background of the era in which the story is set were prepared at the recording site. Yamashita explained, "There were old maps and depictions of what old streets looked like, compared to how they are now. We could tell where the main streets and big shops used to be," indicating that it was a harmonious recording session that touched upon the historical background of the time.
