"Wait, They Can Do That?" Original Manga Creator Surprised by 'Chainsmoker Cat' Anime Adaptation Announcement - Set to Air July 2026, with Yūko Natsuyoshi as Yanineko

The TV anime adaptation of the manga 'Chainsmoker Cat' by Nyan Nyan Factory, currently serialized in Kodansha's "Young Magazine," has been announced. It will begin broadcasting on TOKYO MX and other channels starting July 2026.

The series is set in a world where humans and beastfolk coexist, depicting the daily life of Yanineko, a beastfolk who smokes cigarettes and lives a lazy lifestyle—with no money, no life skills, and as a total good-for-nothing. The story of this "lovably trashy cat" that became a hot topic on social media is incredibly getting an anime adaptation.

The voice of the protagonist Yanineko (real name: Yaniko Satō) will be performed by Yūko Natsuyoshi. Animation production will be handled by Bibury Animation Studios, with Taku Kimura as director, Takashi Aoshima as scriptwriter, and Keiichi Suzuki as composer.

The released teaser visual depicts Yanineko smoking on her apartment balcony. The simultaneously released teaser PV features a presentation that transitions from the original manga panels to animation, and viewers can also hear Yanineko's voice performed by Natsuyoshi saying "Umee nya."

Original creator Nyan Nyan Factory commented, "When the anime adaptation proposal came, my feeling was 'Wait, they can do that?' and when the script and character designs arrived, I felt both joy and the resolve of the anime production team thinking, 'Wait, they can actually do it as-is...'"
