In Episode 8 of the anime "Akane-banashi," broadcast on May 23rd, Karashi Nerimaya (voiced by Takuya Eguchi), a university student who has won the Karakuhai Cup two consecutive times, performed "BM," a modern adaptation of the classical rakugo story "Tenshiki." The rakugo scene, unfolding with anime-original staging, brought in a storm of praise from viewers, with comments like "It was spectacular!" and "It's hilarious because the jokes have increased so much."
In Episode 8, "Needs," the main finals of the Karakuhai Cup opened, and it was time for Karashi, one of the top contenders for the championship, to take the stage. Karashi then began to tell a story set in the modern era. Karashi's signature style was "adapted rakugo," which updates classical rakugo into a modern style so that it easily resonates with younger audiences.
Karashi adapted the classical rakugo story "Tenshiki" into a tale about a proud graduate student who does not know the meaning of the word "BM" and makes his seminar students investigate what "BM" means. Changing the setting and key words into familiar things, the adapted rakugo "BM" was packed with many points that people could relate to and laugh at, successfully capturing the hearts of the audience exactly as intended.
In Karashi's rakugo scene, parts not depicted in the original manga and anime-original staging were also added. The way Karashi seamlessly portrayed multiple characters, both male and female, one after another, unfolded along with conceptual visual imagery, creating a highly compelling scene.
