The TV anime "The Oblivious Saint Can't Contain Her Power" has been broadcasting and streaming since June 30, 2026. Carolina, the second daughter of the Duke of Sanchez family who lives with a sense of inferiority, accepts a political marriage with Edward, the second prince of a neighboring country, for the sake of her nation. This decision becomes the catalyst that drastically changes her life.
Carolina, who had been mistreated by her older sister Flora—a beautiful and talented candidate for saint—meets Edward and other people of the Marchesias Empire. Through these encounters, she gradually becomes properly recognized and begins to accept herself, while her inherent mysterious power is also revealed.
In this article, we conduct an interview with Rie Takahashi, the voice actress who plays Carolina Sánchez (Carolina Ruby Martínez after marriage). We asked her about how Carolina, who repeatedly indulged in self-deprecation, undergoes a transformation, starting from her approach to character building.
——At the point of Episode 1, which we saw at the advance screening, Carolina was being mistreated by her older sister Flora, and her performance left a strong impression with a complete lack of confidence in her words.
Takahashi: Since Carolina is a character who embodies the title, it is easy to unconsciously anticipate that she will definitely achieve greatness in the end. However, I wanted to perform while deeply valuing the worldview and life philosophy she herself had walked up to that point (as of Episode 1).
I believe that what shapes a person's way of thinking and speaking changes significantly depending on the words given to them by the people around them and whether they were in an environment where they could demonstrate their abilities. In her case, the environment she grew up in was just terrible. My impression of Carolina (at the point of Episode 1) is that she starts from a place where she is not acting like her true self.
——That is certainly true.
Takahashi: Therefore, even in her statements, lack of confidence forms the foundation, but I personally had a strong desire not to make it sound merely dark. I cannot express it perfectly, but I wanted the audience to feel her upbringing, so to speak...
——Through meeting Edward and other people from the Marchesias Empire from Episode 2 onward, such Carolina gradually breaks free from her shackles and grows. By feeling that she has a place where she belongs, her inherent kindness and core strength are gradually demonstrated. In terms of your approach to character building, was her true self established as the goal first, and you headed toward it as the episodes piled up?
Takahashi: Yes, I might have decided beforehand (before performing Episode 1) that Carolina is originally this kind of girl. Her inherent ability to make decisions and her power to look forward should have been embedded in the energy of her spoken words. However, because of the environment she grew up in and the lack of people she could talk to comfortably, she became rigid and unable to do so.
——It is truly a case where the environment changes and everything changes.
Takahashi: I felt that because the people around her listened to her properly and prompted her by saying "Try saying it," the things that had become rigid grew cheerful and soft, allowing her to deliver them one by one.
Of course, words like "growth" or "change" might apply, but I personally feel that it was a quality Carolina possessed from the very beginning. My impression is not that she acquired it through growth, but rather that she became able to bring out what she already had.
