It has been announced that Mobile Suit Gundam RG XARX-ZERO, a new animated title in the Gundam series, will be launched in 2027. Along with this announcement, a teaser visual and a teaser PV featuring the lead machine "Gundam ZERO" and the protagonist "Ray Azumi" have been unveiled. Responses from fans have been pouring in, including comments like, "The main mecha is super handsome."
This anime shares its world with GUNDAM ROGUE ORBIT, a game unveiled at "Summer Game Fest" in June. It will be developed as a new cross-media project titled the "RG Project," spanning both titles.
The "RG Project" is a new Gundam project where the animation and the game share the same world and history, depicting the story from different perspectives and distances to build a single overarching history. The world setting was built by director Kenji Kamiyama and author Toh Enjoe. The anime is set roughly 100 years before the game, telling the story that serves as the starting point of the world. Meanwhile, the game takes place in a world following the events depicted in the anime, offering an experience where players themselves participate in history and make new choices.
The story is set in "A.A. (After Apocalypse) 45," an era where humanity was forced to abandon Earth due to the rampage of "Apocalypse," unknown silicon lifeforms that arrived from outside the solar system. The story begins to unfold from the perspective of the protagonist, Ray Azumi—a war orphan who lost his parents in an Apocalypse attack, and the pilot of the state-of-the-art experimental anti-Apocalypse machine, "Gundam ZERO."
Kenji Kamiyama serves as director and series composer, with Takeo Ōtsuka voicing the main character, Ray Azumi. Upon the announcement, Director Kamiyama commented, "Just getting the opportunity to create my beloved Gundam from scratch in the Reiwa era—isn't that the absolute best?! Once I thought of it that way, a really fun Gundam started coming together." Lead voice actor Ōtsuka expressed his enthusiasm, stating, "I approached the recording sessions happily scratching my head over the story Director Kamiyama created. As a cross-media project featuring both an anime and a game, I'm extremely excited for how it develops."
Following the announcement, comments flooded social media. Fans were buzzing with excitement and story theories, sharing thoughts such as: "A cloak and beast-like arms!!!!! This is way too cool," "A right hand with an organic design like the ones in Rogue Orbit...! Is the eye color changing because it's being corrupted?", "The main mecha is super handsome," and "It has a groseness like Ghost in the Shell or AKIRA, combined with a quietness like Evangelion... It really feels like classic anime is back."
