The anime Smoking Behind the Supermarket with You is based on the popular manga by Jinushi, currently serialized in Monthly Big Gangan (SQUARE ENIX). For Sasaki, a middle-aged man worked to the bone by his job, the quiet comforts in life were cigarettes and the cheerful service of Yamada, a female clerk at the supermarket he frequents. One day, however, he heads to the supermarket in search of that comfort only to find Yamada absent, and when he settles for a cigarette instead, there is nowhere to smoke. That is when a woman named Tayama invites Sasaki to the smoking area behind the supermarket.

After overhearing the dispirited Tayama talking to herself, Sasaki is racked with guilt for having eavesdropped, but since he has already heard it, he sets out with his dog Daigoro to do something that will lift her spirits.
