The Moment Demons Were Intimidated by Fern’s “No-Look Guard” and Relentless Pursuit in “Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End”

A fierce battle was expected against the mighty enemy, but an unexpected development took place in episode 9 of the anime “Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End.” When Fern (voiced by Kana Ichinose) blocked the demon’s attack with a “no-look” guard, astonished reactions flooded online, with comments such as, “She even looks elegant,” and, “She radiates an overwhelming presence of strength.”

Fern is a mage who travels alongside Frieren (voiced by Atsumi Tanezaki) as her apprentice. Ever since childhood, she has possessed extraordinary magic control abilities to the extent that even Frieren’s magic detection is barely able to sense her. Despite being Frieren’s apprentice, Fern can cast spells even faster than her master.

In episode 9, Fern faces off in a one-on-one duel against Lugner (voiced by Junichi Suwabe), the right-hand man under “Aura the Guillotine,” one of the Seven Sages of Destruction. Lugner is a demon who has devoted his life to the study of magic, overshadowing Fern in every aspect: magical power, technique, and control. Yet, Fern effortlessly defends against the ferocious assault, blocking even surprise attacks from behind without so much as a glance. Using her tremendous speed, she skillfully counters and steadily corners Lugner instead.
