June 29 is “Tsukudani Day.” In the broadcast on Sunday, June 29, a segment called “Tsukudani Day! I’m Going to Eat a Lot — Chukudani-One Championship” was held, in which Yu Serizawa and Maria Naganawa compared 15 different kinds of tsukudani to decide the “Sunday Asobi Champion.”

Serizawa, Naganawa, and the Sunday staff each gave scores, and the one tsukudani that stood out above the rest was crowned as the No.1 tsukudani. Freshly cooked rice was prepared in the studio, and the two tasted each type of tsukudani one by one. The first contender was the classic “Kombu Tsukudani.” As soon as they tasted it, both said with big smiles, “Delicious, it’s the perfect flavor for breakfast!”

Next was “Shijimi Tsukudani,” and as a lover of seafood, Serizawa commented enthusiastically, “The true potential of shijimi is really brought out!” She gave high praise. For the “Jako Tsukudani,” both hosts were visibly excited, exclaiming, “This is really the best! I want to eat it in a rice ball!” Serizawa confessed, “I thought this segment might not last long (laughs)… I’m sorry, it’s just too tasty!” which brought laughter to the studio.

Then came “Tarako Tsukudani,” which was a first-time experience for both. Their honest reaction was, “It’s tough! (laughs) But the flavor is good!” As the fifth dish, “Shiitake Tsukudani,” was brought out, Serizawa suddenly commented, “Wait, Maria, you’re dressed like tsukudani!” Naganawa’s outfit happened to be in “tsukudani colors,” which the others found hilarious—her “tsukudani fashion” got everyone laughing.

As for the “Ha Togarashi Tsukudani,” Serizawa seemed a bit intimidated by its appearance, but remarked, “It has a nostalgic kind of scariness.” She tasted it with a complex expression, saying, “I like spicy flavors, but the artistic points for appearance are…” On to the luxurious “Unagi Tsukudani,” she commented with a giant smile, “Wow—it tastes like the star of the show!” Both gave it a unanimously high rating.
