Zoom in

——Regarding the title of the photo book, "Silhouette," did you decide on this title yourself, Date-san?

Date: Yes, when I released my first photo book three years ago, I was allowed to choose the title "Ashiato" (Footprints) myself, and I wanted to think of one myself this time as well.

——What meaning did you put into it?

Date: I was thinking about using scenery that left an impression during the shoot, or things I felt, for the title. So I was taking notes and thinking during the shoot like, "Would this be good?" But all of them, how should I say... they felt too specific to that particular moment. I also felt that would be a bit of a waste.

So when I returned to Tokyo and reflected on it, I realized that throughout the time I was shooting in Hong Kong and Macau, I constantly had thoughts like, "If I take this kind of shot, if I make this kind of expression in this kind of place, would it make the people watching and supporting me happy? Would they enjoy it?"

I wasn't consciously aware of it that strongly during the shoot, but it wasn't just me—the entire staff was united in shooting while thinking about the readers.

So, it's a photo book with me in it, but it was shot while constantly imagining the people who would read it... That's why, from the meanings of "figure" and "shadow," I chose "Silhouette." I also feel there's a bit of connection to my first photo book "Ashiato."
