Interview with Tetsu Inada as Landlord
—First of all, please tell us how you felt when you were chosen to appear in this series.
Inada: I had been performing the opening scene of Episode 1 since the audition stage, but I went into it thinking that if I was going to do it, I wanted to deliver an interesting performance without any compromise, and since I was auditioning, I absolutely wanted to play the role myself. So, I was incredibly happy when I received the acceptance notification. At the same time, I thought, "Oh boy, things have gotten serious, this is a huge responsibility!" In many ways.
—Next, please tell us your impression of the work and the charm you felt while acting.
Inada: Well, anyway, it’s a work with an incredible impact, isn't it? But it's not one-dimensional; it has ups and downs, and even emotional depth. It has a dizzying contrast, violently dragging you from a slice-of-life atmosphere into the extraordinary. Every character has a really unpleasant side, yet they are irresistibly lovable.
—What do you think is the charm of the character "Landlord" you played?
Inada: The broad-mindedness to ultimately forgive everything, no matter what terrible things he goes through. There are times when he strictly lectures Yani-Neko and the others, but that is also out of kindness. He has an endlessly large capacity as a man, with a wild yet strong core. However, he also hides a mysterious side that he can't tell anyone about.
—We would also like to ask about the voice recording. How did you feel after recording?
Inada: It’s fun for me. But I wonder how the main female cast members feel, though. Well, that's how we're having fun recording it.
—Finally, do you have a message for the fans who are looking forward to the broadcast?
Inada: This Chainsmoker Cat might be the most controversial work of this season, no, this year, no, in the history of anime. I wonder what kind of reaction the world will have! Please watch it until the very end.
